Lemorak, Archer and I made the rounds of the Merchant shops after that. After a month in the woods, my inventory was packed to bursting with sellable loot. I sold off everything the Merchants would take that I didn’t need, then made some select purchases that Lemorak and I had been planning.

From the bowyer I bought a new compound shortbow, designed to leverage my higher strength score, and refilled my arrow supply. We went to the armorer and bought a new set of leather armor to replace my existing Troll-ravaged armor. From the provisioner I picked up a compact camp tent, a cookware set of my own, a warmer bedroll, and stocked up on rations so I wouldn’t have to hunt as much. From the tanner I picked up a harness and pack set that would let me stow gear on Archer when I wanted. When I fastened the harness on the wolf, he paced around and looked decidedly unhappy with the setup.

I also picked up a Ranger’s Cloak, thick waterproofed canvas, in a splotchy camouflage pattern of greens and browns with little loops on it that would let me tie vegetation to it. The cloak would be warmer in cooler weather and also provide a bonus to my Stealth checks when I was in woodland areas.

We met up with Macha and the Glittertooths for a picnic lunch on the village square. The three were talking and laughing when we arrived. No one noticed Archer until Lemorak and I stopped and the wolf came up and sat down beside me. My friends reacted with astonished respect for my accomplishment. I found out that wolves were common animal companions, as were falcons, cougars, and sometimes bears. A dire wolf was an uncommon result except for higher level Rangers that underwent the ritual, usually when replacing a slain companion. I hadn’t considered the possibility that Archer might die while fighting beside me. The thought made my guts twist with anxiety.

Over lunch we all caught up on how we’d spent the morning. Bolton had been shopping for spell components, while Macha and Illiya had sold off various bits of loot and resupplied. Then everyone wanted to hear the story of bonding Archer to me. The entire group found his personality quite the curiosity, but I tried to downplay it. Over the course of the afternoon, I’d found Archer understood many basic dog commands, even without training him yet. He’d respond to his name, sit, stay, lay down, and even heel.

“I told you, Zee. Archer’s special,” Lemorak insisted after the party had universally agreed. Archer barked his agreement as well. Everyone laughed and the wolf gave us a panting canine grin again.

“Well, putting aside the question of Zee’s wolf for now. Has everyone had a chance to think about setting up a Party Pact?” Bolton asked.

“I still think someone dropped you as a child,” Lemorak replied.

“Aye! It was me. Repeatedly!” Illiya chortled. “But my little brother's suggestion still bears merit.”

“I agree. Let’s go kick some Goblin-ass.
